Post Lab: Integumentary System

  • Epidermis: Outermost layer, made of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.

    • Stratum Corneum: Contains dead, flattened keratinocytes which provide a barrier to water loss.

    • Stratum Lucidum: Found only in thick skin (e.g., palms, soles), adds an extra layer of protection.

    • Stratum Granulosum: Keratinocytes undergoing keratinization, contributing to the skin's protective function.

    • Stratum Spinosum: Contains spiny keratinocytes that provide strength and flexibility, and houses Langerhans cells, which play a role in immune response.

    • Stratum Basale: Deepest layer where mitosis occurs; contains melanocytes producing melanin, responsible for skin pigmentation.

  • Dermis: Beneath the epidermis, composed of connective tissue.

    • Papillary Layer: Contains capillaries and sensory neurons, increases surface area for exchange of nutrients and waste.

    • Reticular Layer: Denser and thicker, providing strength and elasticity through collagen and elastin fibers.
