Types of Reproduction:

Asexual Reproduction

  • general info:

    • only one parent needed

    • each offspring is exactly like the parent

    • faster rate of reproduction

    • potential for more offspring

  • disadvantages:

    • all offspring inherit all traits, even the “bad” ones

    • no genetic variation

Sexual Reproduction

  • general info:

    • creates offspring similar to each parent

    • two parents needed

    • less potential for more offspring

    • half of each parent’s genetics is passed to the offspring

  • advantages:

    • genetic diversity

  • disadvantages:

    • no control over traits

    • 2 cells required

    • slower population growth

Types of Reproductive Cells:

Reproductive cells are called gametes

Males:

  • the male gamete is called sperm

    • sperm is made through spermatogenesis

      • created at puberty (9-18 years) until death

      • four cells are made and are replaced every 24-36 hours

    • sperm cells are stored in the testicles/scrotum

Females:

  • the female gamete is called an egg cell/ovum/oocyte

    • egg cells are made through oogenesis

      • initial cells are made during prenatal development

        • will be available as mature cells/puberty (9-18 years)

    • egg cells are stored in the ovary

    • women are born with ~ 300,000 egg cell
