What is The Louisiana Purchase?

• The LP took place in 1803.

• It was a land deal between the U.S. and France

• The U.S. got about 827,000 square miles of the Mississippi River for $15 mil

• The deal was supposed to be the purchase of New Orleans for $10 mil

• France could not afford it and because of this they decided to abandon the idea of empire and sell it to the U.S.

• The LP greatly benefited the U.S. It doubled in size, expanding the nation westward.
