Pickney’s treaty 1795: b/w america and spain, lets america navigate mississippi river, helping economic growth
Florida purchase treaty 1819: america gets florida from spain, expansion occurs
Missouri compromise 1820: makes missouri a state and balances out what is a slave and what is a free states. Divides future territories into free states and slave states
Monroe doctrine 1823: tells european countries to not colonize western countries, impacts manifest destiny
Haitian revolution 1791-1804: very successful slave revolution where people are scared more slave revolutions might happen again
Compromise of 1850: several laws which want to resolve tensions over slavery in territories gained from mexico, like the fugitive slave act
California gold rush 1848-55: people discover gold in california and a lot of people move there. Complicates slavery since california is about to become a state

Kansas-nebraska act 1854: law lets kansas and nebraska decide issue of slavery by popular sovereignty, repeals missouri compromise’
Uncle tom’s cabin 1852: book by harriet stowe, makes public dislike slavery, especially in the north. Increases tensions between north and south
Free soil party 1848-54: political party that want slavery to end in new territories and free the land for settlers
Mason dixon line 1763-67: boundary between pennsylvania and maryland, divides north and southern territories
Fugitive slave act 1850: requires citizens to help capture runaway slaves
Dred scott decision 1857: supreme court ruled dred scott, a slave living in free territories, couldn’t sue because african americans weren’t citizens. Also rules congress couldn’t stop slavery in territories, saying missouri compromise bad
Lincoln douglas debates 1858: debates between president lincoln and stephen douglas that discussed the issue of slavery’s expansion in territories. Lincoln was against slavery expansion while douglas promoted popular sovereignty (like a democracy)
Harper’s ferry raid 1859: john brown led a raid at harper’s ferry to start a slave revolt which failed. This caused tensions between north and southern states
