Empire Windrush

1948 = Britain has just recovered for the WWII. Thousands of men and women from Jamaïca had served for the british armes forces. They had to rebuild the destroyed cities and buidings so they offered jobs to Jamaicans.

22nd June 1948 = arrived on the Empire Windrush but when they arrived Britain was not as friendly as they oped, they experienced racism and discrimination, its hard for they to find a proper home, kids were bullied. There were racial attacks and race riots, so black people had to support each other.

The Windrush scandal

Windrush generation were considered as illegal immigrants and wrongly legal rights. Also the « hostile environnement » police made their life extremly difficult.

Contributions of the WG to British society :

• Healthcare

• Education

• Manufacturing

• Led to the establisment of the race relations act

Actions were taken to honour the memory of the WG:

• The Prime Minister

• A commemorative statue
