English Language

Main Idea

  • The main idea of a passage is the central point or message the author wants to convey.

Inference

  • An inference is a logical conclusion based on evidence and reasoning from the text.

Author's Purpose

  • Identify the author's purpose by looking for clues:
    • Persuade (opinion words)
    • Inform (facts)
    • Entertain (storytelling)

Pronoun Usage

  • Subject Pronouns: Use subject pronouns (e.g., he, she, I, we, they) when the pronoun is the subject of the sentence.
    • Example: "The nurse and he."
  • Object Pronouns: Use object pronouns (e.g., him, her, me, us, them) when the pronoun is the object of a verb or preposition.
    • Example: "The patient gave it to her and me."

Sentence Correction

  • Correct order: "The doctor and I" is correct, not "Me and the doctor."

Subject-Verb Agreement

  • Ensure the verb agrees with the subject. If the subject is singular, use a singular verb; if plural, use a plural verb.
    • Example: "The list of symptoms is" (singular).

Parallel Adverbs

  • Adverbs in a series should be parallel.
    • Example: "Quickly and efficiently checked the chart" is correct.

Predicate Identification

  • The predicate of a sentence includes the verb and all the words that modify or complete the verb.
    • Example: In "The doctor examined the patient," the predicate is "examined the patient."

Sentence Types

  • Simple Sentence: One independent clause.
  • Compound Sentence: Two independent clauses joined by a FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) conjunction.
  • Compound-Complex Sentence: Two or more independent clauses and one dependent clause.

Comma Usage

  • Use a comma after an introductory phrase.
    • Example: "After lunch, we took vital signs."
  • Use commas to set off parenthetical elements like "however."
    • Example: "The medication, however, was not administered."

Apostrophe Usage

  • Use an apostrophe to show possession.
    • Example: "The patient's chart is missing" (possessive).

Spelling Rules

  • Doubling Consonants: Double the final consonant before adding -ing or -ed when a one-syllable word ends in consonant-vowel-consonant.

  • Their: Shows possession.
