Biology – Quick Reference Notes (Transcript Summary)
Brainbow Neurons in the Hippocampus
Image shows neurons in the hippocampus labeled with multiple fluorescent colors to visualize connections.
Known as Brainbow (rainbow) imaging; highlights neuronal wiring.
Cloned Cat CC (CopyCat)
Top-right image shows CC, a cloned cat produced from a somatic cell (somatic cell nuclear transfer).
Clone is a later-born twin of the original cat; “copycat.”
Cost to clone: –.
Sister Chloe is calico; calico patterning observed in the clone’s kin.
Chromosomes and Telomeres
Cheek cell contains chromosomes; pairs.
After duplication, chromosomes appear as X-shaped structures.
Fluorescent dots mark telomeres (the ends of chromosomes).
Telomeres protect chromosomes and shorten with age; aging is linked but not solely determined by telomere length.
Increasing telomeres does not guarantee longer life and can raise cancer risk.
Canvas Resources and Course Logistics
Two class sections (K101 at 10:30 and K102 at noon); students can mix and match across sections for attendance/points.
Canvas site as home base: contains syllabus, Kaltura channel, and modules.
Modules house the course materials; additional resources include Pearson access and various videos.
Biology resource center updates, thinking skills resources, and metacognitive tools.
Lab manual available as PDF; paper lab manual recommended; electronic recitation pad is an acceptable alternative to paper recitation.
Exams, lab times, and recitation times are listed in Canvas.
