Note that dysfunction does not equate to a psychological disorder.
Distress: Causes significant emotional or physical pain.
Internal experiences leading to discomfort or torment, e.g.:
Difficulty concentrating.
Emotional pain, such as sadness.
Important distinctions:
Not all psychological disorders cause distress (e.g., Antisocial Personality Disorder).
Not all distressing experiences imply a psychological disorder (e.g., distress from hunger during fasting).
Deviance: Behaviors that are culturally unexpected and violate social norms.
Unusual thoughts and behaviors assessed in context.
Example: Repetitive rituals in individuals with OCD considered disordered.
Dangerousness: Refers to behaviors that could harm oneself or others.
Represents a severe aspect of psychological conditions and is not always present.
Can manifest non-violently (e.g., inability to care for oneself).
Continuum of Abnormality
Behaviors and mental states exist on a spectrum.
Challenges in defining clear boundaries of mental disorders; the continuum model is essential for discussing all disorders.
Theories of Psychopathology
A set of ideas that guides the observation and interpretation of mental health issues.
Different theories provide varied frameworks:
No singular theory is regarded as the definitive model for understanding mental disorders.
Biological Approaches to Mental Disorders
