Evolution of Dietary Standards
1940s: Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA)
The first official dietary standards were established as the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).
1997: Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI)
The RDA was updated and expanded to the current Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI).

Understanding the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI)
Nutritional Recommendations: DRI values are tailored for specific population groups.

They are not designed for restoring health or replenishing nutrients in those with existing deficiencies.

Components of the DRI Lists

Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)

Adequate Intakes (AI)

Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR)
Definition: Healthy ranges of intake for carbohydrate, fat, and protein, expressed as percentages of total daily caloric intake.

Estimated Average Requirements (EAR)

Definition: The newest addition to the DRI values.
Purpose: Identifies specific nutrient intake levels associated with a lower risk of chronic diseases.
Daily Values on Food Labels
Requirement: Food labels must provide a single value for each nutrient, applicable to anyone over the age of .

Four Key Dietary Guidelines for 2020-2025
Guideline 1: Follow a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage.

Infancy (first months): Exclusively human milk feeding. If unavailable, use iron-fortified commercial infant formula.

Adaptability: The Dietary Guidelines offer a flexible framework that can be tailored to individual needs, preferences, and the diverse foodways within the United States.
Guideline 3: Focus on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and beverages, and stay within calorie limits.
Composition: A healthy dietary pattern consists of nutrient-dense foods and beverages from all food groups, consumed in recommended amounts and within established calorie limits.
Guideline 4: Limit foods and beverages higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium, and limit alcoholic beverages.
Calorie Allocation: Meeting food group recommendations with nutrient-dense choices consumes most of a person's daily calorie and sodium allowance.
Limited Room: There is minimal room for extra added sugars, saturated fat, sodium, or alcoholic beverages.
Small Additions: Minor amounts of added sugar, fat, or sodium can enhance nutrient-dense foods to help meet food group recommendations.
Specific Limits & Recommendations:
Added Sugars: Less than of calories per day starting at age . Avoid added sugars for children younger than age .

Vegetables: Vary your veggies. Choose from all five subgroups several times a week ( vegetables cut-up raw/cooked vegetables, cooked legumes, vegetable juice, raw leafy greens).
Nutrients: Folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, fiber.
Subgroups: Dark-green, red and orange, legumes, starchy, and other vegetables.
Limit: Vegetables with solid fats and/or added sugars (e.g., french fries, potato salad).
Protein Foods: Vary your protein foods ( protein foods cooked lean meat/poultry/seafood, egg, cooked legumes/tofu, peanut butter, nuts/seeds).
Nutrients: Protein, essential fatty acids, niacin, thiamin, vitamin B, vitamin B, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc.
Subgroups: Seafood (twice a week), lean meats/poultry/eggs, nuts/seeds/soy products.
Limit: Protein foods high in solid fats and/or added sugars (e.g., bacon, fried meats, hot dogs).
