Performing Hand Hygiene Using Soap and Water (Handwashing)
Implementation Steps
Gather Necessary Supplies
Stand in front of the sink.
Ensure that clothing does not touch the sink during the washing procedure.
Remove Jewelry
Prior to patient contact, if possible, remove all jewelry and secure it in a safe place.
Note: A plain band may remain in place based on facility policy.
Turn On Water
Adjust the force of the water and regulate the temperature until it is warm.
Wet Hands and Wrist
Wet both hands and wrist area thoroughly.
Keep hands lower than elbows to allow water to flow toward fingertips.
Apply Soap
Use about 1 teaspoon of liquid soap from the dispenser or rinse the bar of soap and lather thoroughly.
Use a firm circular motion to lather.
Alternatively, use the amount of soap product recommended by the manufacturer.
Ensure to cover all areas of the hands with the soap product.
If using bar soap, rinse it again and place it back on the soap rack without touching the rack.
Wash Hands
Continue using firm rubbing and circular motions.
Wash the following areas thoroughly:
Palms and backs of the hands
Each finger
Areas between the fingers
Knuckles, wrists, and forearms
Ensure to wash at least 1 inch above the area of contamination.
If hands are not visibly soiled, wash to 1 inch above the wrists.
Friction Motion Duration
Continue this friction motion for at least 15–20 seconds.
Clean Under Fingernails
Use the fingernails of the opposite hand to clean under the fingernails.
Rinse Hands
Rinse hands thoroughly under running water with water flowing toward fingertips.
Dry Hands
Pat hands dry with a paper towel, starting from the fingers moving upward toward the forearms.
Discard the towel immediately after use.
Use another clean towel to turn off the faucet, and then discard that towel immediately without touching other clean hands.
Moisturize (Optional)
Use a moisturizing hand lotion or cream, as approved by facility policy.
