Selflessness and Service to Christ
Imagination Exercise
Imagine a large candle on a table.
The candle provides light but is consumed in the process.
The Candle Analogy
The candle gives off light as it is consumed, getting smaller and smaller.
Like a candle, we give warmth and guidance but are used up in the process.
Paul's Example: Living for Christ
Paul states, "For me to live is Christ."
He pours out his life in service for the glory of God, being used up as he shares the life and love of Christ.
Serving Christ means being spent for the sake of others, even if it means personal sacrifice.
Purpose in Life
What is your life about? What is your chief end or main goal?
Is it glory, legacy, comfort, or control?
Westminster Catechism
The first question: "What is the chief end of man?"
Answer: "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever."
Catechism teaches essential Christian beliefs in a short, memorizable format.
Balancing Duty and Desire
A believer's purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
This involves balancing duty and desire.
The Sweetness of Eternity
Heaven gets sweeter with time, especially as loved ones who were believers pass away.
Paul's desire was to depart and be with Christ.
This longing stems from a matured love for Jesus, not just a desire to escape the world.
Eternity with Jesus is far better than life on Earth.
Eternity with Christ
In eternity with Christ:
Pain ceases.
Sorrow is gone.
Sin is demolished.
Darkness is driven out.
There is no war, hunger, or thirst.
Disease is eradicated.
Eternity wouldn't be good or even possible without Christ, who is the ultimate treasure.
Serving Others
Serving Jesus means serving, strengthening, and discipling others.
Paul is willing to postpone personal joy for the sake of the church’s growth, demonstrating selflessness.
Selflessness Defined
Selflessness: Putting God’s glory first, others next, and oneself last.
It involves sacrificing personal desires for the benefit of others.
This is obedience for a believer.
Reoriented Desires
The Gospel doesn’t crush desires but reorients them.
Love for Jesus shapes life for others.
Following Jesus means reorienting desires and dreams to be Christ-centered and others-driven.
Paul's Example of Submission
Though free in Christ, Paul submits himself as a servant to Christ for all people.
He meets people where they are, connecting with them in their journey to bring them to Jesus.
Serving and Loving Others
Using every moment—day, hour, minute—to serve Christ and love others.
Lesson me, more of Him.
Looking to Christ
Jesus came not to be served but to serve and give His life for many.
Paul shows gospel-shaped selflessness, but Jesus embodied it perfectly.
We can glory in Christ Jesus because of continued ministry.
Benefits Through Christ
Through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, we have:
Peace with God.
Adoption as sons and daughters.
The ability to say, "To live is Christ, and to die is gain."
Jesus empowered selflessness by staying; we can now go because He served.
We have hope and glory because of His sacrifice.
Strength Through Christ
We can now serve because He gave up glory; strength to do this only comes from Him.
Paul rejoices even in prison because his hope is in Christ, not comfort.
Life is fruitful labor; death is gain.
The purpose is to glorify Jesus and serve others, even at personal cost.
A Radical, Biblical Calling
Is your life centered on Christ?
Are you rejoicing even in trials, serving even when it's hard, and sacrificing for the good of others?
This is a calling for all who follow Jesus.
Responding in Faith
Submit to the call to die to self and live in Christ.
Ask the Lord for strength to spend every moment for His glory, serving Him and loving others.
Repent of sin and trust in the only one who can save you.
