The structure of the inner ear

bony labyrinth - encloses membranous labyrinth, separated by the Perilymph

  • contains semicircular canals, vestibule and cochlea

Membranous labyrinth - interconnected network of fluid filled tubes

  • contains endolymph, semicircular ducts, utricle, saccule and cochlear ducts

Semicircular ducts - respond to rotation of the head (continuous with utricle)

  • Anterior semicircular ducts - “yes”

  • Lateral semicircular ducts - “no”

  • Posterior semicircular ducts- tilting head side to side
