Freak the Mighty Notes Ch 1-4
Chapter 1:
Max’s nickname was Kicker because if anybody tries to mess with him, he’ll kick back. This aggressive behavior stemmed from years of feeling threatened and bullied by others, which eventually contributed to his struggle with self-identity.
About Max‘s grandparents, Max doesn’t like his grandparents’ hugs, and they brought him to daycare to help with his temper. They’re mysterious when it comes to dad. He tolerates them, and he is conflicted. This can cause anger.
Max doesn’t think highly of himself. Not confident. Max might feel he’s stronger than his rates. This internal struggle may lead him to act out, as he grapples with feelings of inadequacy and the pressure to meet the expectations set by those around him.
Chapter 2:
In Max’s bedroom, his basement is a cluttered space, cheaply handled and filled with old furniture that reflects his chaotic thoughts and feelings.
Grim and Gram are afraid of Max due to having interest in an explosive, M8O. This fear stems from their concerns about the potential for Max to get hurt or to hurt others, reinforcing his feeling of isolation and the battle between wanting to be understood and the fear of causing harm.
Kevin was given orders to the moving men because he was worried about his computers. He demonstrated a keen understanding of the importance of his technology, highlighting his sense of responsibility despite his physical limitations.
Chapter 3:
Kevin makes Max feel different because Kevin talks about a lot of things, such as science and technology.
When Max helps Kevin get his toy (ormithopter) and they end up hanging out and playing together in the backyard, Max begins to see how their friendship can transcend their differences, allowing them to bond over shared interests and adventures.
Kevin wasn’t embarrassed to have Max pulling him in the wagon because he’s having fun, and he’s already used to people viewing him as different with his crutches and condition.
Chapter 4:
Kevin calls his mother Gwen "The Fair Gwen of Air" as a literary allusion to Fair Guinevere from King Arthur's legends, reflecting his love for these stories and his imaginative nature.
Kevin likes the story of King Arthur because he identifies with Arthur as a physically unimposing but capable hero who achieves greatness.
Gwen was worried about Kevin because she was terrified of Max's size, being as like her father and his past, which led to her being overly protective and anxious about their interactions.
