Perfect Ionic Model

Hydration enthalpy is calculated assuming that ions are “perfectly” ionic

“Perfect” ionic model -

  • ions are perfectly spherical

  • ions display no covalent character

Covalent character -

  • occurs when bonded ions have varying sizes or charges

  • therefore uneven distribution of charge

  • shown by greater difference in electronegativity
