1.1. Definition: Host, Parasite, Parasitology, Vector, Commensalisms, mutualism, and parasitism.
Parasitology- It is a science that deals with the study of parasites.
- Parasitology is a discipline that studies the structure and physiology of parasites, their host, and host-parasite interactions.
Medical Parasitology is a branch of science that deals with the study of parasites of medical importance such as protozoan and helminthic parasites that cause diseases in humans.
- Medical parasitology includes the study of three major groups of animals: Parasitic protozoa, parasitic helminths (worms), and arthropods that directly or indirectly cause diseases or act as vectors of various parasites.
Parasites - An organism that entirely depends on another organism i.e. its host, for all part of its life cycle and metabolic requirements.
- Parasite→ Greek word ‘paasitos’, means→ “ one who eats at the table of another”.
- Examples- are leeches, lice protozoa, helminth worms, bugs, fungi, fleas, viruses, and tapeworms.
- A parasite could be unicellular, worm or an arthropod.
- Features of Parasites- Smaller than their host, outnumer the host, short life span than their host, and have greater reproductive potential than their host.

1.1. Definitions
Host: An organism that harbors the parasite.
Parasite: An organism that lives in or on another organism (host) and benefits at the host's expense.
Parasitoids: Insects whose larval stages develop within or on the outside of other insects, eventually killing their hosts.
Vector: An arthropod or other living carrier that transports pathogenic microorganisms from an infected to a non-infected host.
Commensalism: A relationship where one organism benefits while the host is neither harmed nor benefited.
Mutualism: Both partners are metabolically dependent on each other and benefit from the association.
Parasitism: One organism (parasite) lives at the expense of another organism (host), which usually suffers from the association.
1.2. Branches of Parasitology
Medical Parasitology: The study of parasites causing diseases in humans.
Focuses on:
Parasitic protozoa
Parasitic helminths (worms)
Arthropods that directly cause disease or act as vectors

Parasites
Definition: Organisms entirely dependent on another (the host) for all or part of their lifecycle and metabolic requirements.
Nature: Unicellular, worms, or arthropods.
Features: Smaller than their host, outnumber the host, short lifespan, greater reproductive potential.
Hosts
Definition: Organisms that harbor parasites.
Types:
Human, plants, animals
Specialized organs, cells, tissue

Definition: The relationship where the parasite benefits from the host's resources, often causing harm to the host.
Example: Ascaris lumbricoides in the gastrointestinal tract of humans.
🦟 Parasitoids
Definition: Small insects whose immature stages develop within or on the host insect, eventually killing the host.
Types:
Endoparasitoids: Develop inside the host.
Ectoparasitoids: Attach to the outside of the host.
Categories: Mainly wasps and bees (Hymenoptera) or flies (Diptera).

Role: Significant in maintaining the population of pest insects below damaging levels.
🕊 Vectors
Definition: Arthropods or other carriers transporting pathogenic microorganisms.
Biological Vectors: Complete the lifecycle of a parasite (e.g., Anopheles for Plasmodium).
Mechanical Vectors: Passive carriers, non-essential to the parasite's lifecycle (e.g., flies, cockroaches).

Mutualism: Mutual benefit from association.
Symbiosis: Permanent association, indispensable for both.
Commensalism: Parasite benefits without harming the host.

Endoparasites: Live inside the host (e.g., Entamoeba histolytica).

Temporary Parasites: Short-term association (e.g., mosquito).
Permanent Parasites: Long-term or lifelong association.

Parasitic Protists
Entamoeba histolytica
Pathogenic Amoeba: Causes amoebic dysentery in humans.
Forms:
Trophozoite: Feeding, motile stage.

Cyst: Infective, non-feeding stage.
🌿 Life Cycle of Entamoeba histolytica
Cyst Stage: Ingestion through contaminated food/water.
Excystation: Cysts transform into trophozoites in the small intestine.
Trophozoite Stage: Active in the large intestine, feeding on mucosa and sub-mucosa.
Encystment: Formation of a cyst under unfavorable conditions.
Transmission: Faecal-oral route.
Infective Stage: Mature quadrinucleate cyst.
🏥 Pathogenicity and Clinical Features
Intestinal Pathologies: Causing diarrhea, blood in stools, abdominal pain.
Extraintestinal Pathologies: Liver abscess, lung abscess, brain abscess.
Asymptomatic Carriers: Important in transmission.
