Management of Ingested Poisons (EGAM)

1. Administration of Activated Charcoal

  • Purpose: Prevents absorption of poison in the digestive system (as an adsorbent).

  • Method: Given as a slurry either orally or via nasogastric tube (NGT).

  • Limitations (CI): Not effective for cyanide or iron poisoning.

2. Alternatives to Activated Charcoal (ME)

  • If activated charcoal is not available, administer milk:

    • Types: Fresh or evaporated milk can be effective for certain poisonings.

    • Useful for (CT): Copper sulfate or thioglycolate poisonings.

  • Egg whites as an alternative:

    • Note: Only the white of the egg (egg albumin) is to be administered.
