Friday Review Session 2/14

Red blood cell count

  • Men: 4.7 – 6.1 million

  • Women: 4.2 – 5.4 million

  • Children: 4.1 – 5.5 million

PRBC’s packed red blood cells to get blood volume going

Acute blood loss

trauma patient

look at RBC WBC platelet - CBC with diff

first hour is the most critical lifesaving hour

4 hours to infuse blood

must know RBC hematocrit and hemoglobin

4-11

hemoglobin on male 14-16

hematocrit will typically be 3 times

carry oxygen iron glucose

ABGs arterial blood gases (Arterial oxygen percentage)

O2 sat

4-6 L of blood going through heart per min

5 or 6 hemoglobin → oxygen level will not be normal because lowered RBCs

blood loss affects WBC (immune system) and RBCs count

kidneys make erythropoetin

colony stimulating factors can increase output of bone marrow of WBCs

H&H <7 is less than half normal

brain and organs needs oxygen

hemorrhagic trauma patient will have CBC count be monitored

blood typing

  • incompatibility can cause transfusion reactions

allergies → anaphylaxis

medical history, family history, medications (have hematological side effects)**NOTE THIS

aspirin blood thinner anti-platelet

RBC arrowed down, h&h is arrowed down too

OTC need to ask what Pt is taking

aplastic anemia

pancytopenia

— can be caused by chemotherapy

4000 mg or 4 g of tylenol per adult , too much can damage liver

neupogen treats neutropenia (low neutrophils)

how high with ALL? neutrophil count

high neutrophil count (neutrophilia) → anemia, hemolysis, thrombocytopenia

thorough workup, diagnose with bone marrow biopsy

→ hematology oncology

elder suffer from iron deficiency anemia

ESRD→ 1 in 7

nsaids affect kidneys, heart, and stomach →

normal platelet -? 100-400,000

thrombocytopenia→ low

bright red stool→ hematochesia

black stool → melona

azo → red urine looking

pyelonephritis

hemodialysis

hodgkins vs. nonhodgkins lymphoma

  • use discussion board
