Visual Pathway Fundamentals

  • Receptive Fields: Areas where sensory stimuli evoke nerve responses; for vision, distinct light/dark contrasts define them (e.g., contrasting light in center versus surround).- Ganglion Cells (On-Center/Off-Center): Cells excited by light in the center and inhibited by light in the surround (on-center), or vice-versa (off-center). An antagonistic surround means stimulating the center inhibits the surround.
  • Contrast and Edge Detection: High contrast, especially at edges, effectively activates these pathways, making them crucial for detecting visual contours.
  • Types of Ganglion Cells:
    • Midget Cells (P Cells): Smaller receptive fields, higher spatial acuity, feed into the parvocellular pathway.
    • Parasol Cells (M Cells): More expansive dendritic fields, feed into the magnocellular pathway.
    • Bistratified Cells: Sensitive to color.
  • Color Vision: Involves opponent processes (e.g., red on/green off, blue/yellow) based on comparisons of cone activity.
  • Ganglion Cell Projections: Axons form the optic nerve and project to key regions:
    • Pretectum & Superior Colliculus: Encode luminance, motion, and reflexes.
    • Intrinsically Photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells (ipRGCs): Project to the hypothalamus, regulating circadian rhythm.
    • Lateral Geniculate Nucleus (LGN): The primary visual perception target, a six-layered thalamic structure; four layers are dedicated to the parvocellular pathway. Involved in multisensory integration, attention, and arousal.
