Mathematics Study Guide: Rounding, Estimation, and Division by 0.5
Session Overview
- Date: 12/10/26
- Time: 11:30–13:30
- Student / Participant: Joshua
- Subject Area: MATHS
Rounding vs. Estimating
- Rounding is fundamentally more precise than estimating.
- Standard Rounding Targets:
- Questions commonly specify rounding a number up or down to target place values or metrics:
- Tens
- Hundreds
- Thousands
- Decimal Places
- Significant figures
Estimation Methodology and Rules
- Examination Expectation:
- Exam questions frequently require estimation rather than exact calculation.
- Definition of Estimation:
- To estimate means rounding each value to a significant figure (typically one significant figure).
- Procedural Rule of Order:
- Always estimate first, then carry out the calculation on the rounded values.
- Worked Example:
- Original expression: 11.3491048RY×61.20
- Step 1 — Round each term to a single significant figure:
- 48RY rounds to 50
- 61.20 rounds to 60
- 11.34910 rounds to 10
- Step 2 — Perform the calculation:
- 1050×60=300
Dividing by 0.5
- Core Operational Rule:
- Dividing any quantity by 0.5 doubles that number.
- The KFC Method Applied to Division:
- When dividing by 0.5, execute the KFC procedure:
- Keep it: Keep the initial number (dividend) unchanged.
- Flip it: Invert the fraction/divisor (0.5=21, which flips to 12=2).
- Change it: Change the arithmetic operation from division to multiplication.
- Worked Example:
- Starting number: 800
- Application: Double this number
- Calculation: 800÷0.5=1600
