Vehicle Inspection Checklist

In-Vehicle/Engine Start Inspection

  • Air or Hydraulic Brake Check:
    • Automatic failure if not done correctly.
  • Parking Brake Check:
    • Ensure it holds the vehicle properly.
  • Trailer Brake Check:
    • Must be inspected for functionality.
  • Service Brake Check:
    • Verify operation and responsiveness.
  • Lighting Indicators:
    • Check turn signals, high beams, ABS light for proper function.
  • Emergency Equipment:
    • Ensure the presence of 3 triangles, a fire extinguisher, and spare fuses.
  • Windshield & Traffic Monitoring Devices:
    • Must be clear and not damaged for visibility.
  • Wipers & Washers:
    • Check if they are working and effective.
  • Heater & Defroster:
    • Must function adequately.
  • Horn(s):
    • Verify that the horn is operational.

Lights Operations Check

  • All External Lights:
    • Essential lights to verify include:
    • Headlights: Both high & low beam must be operational.
    • Turn Signals: Check both front & rear turn signals.
    • 4-Way Flashers: Verify functioning of hazard lights.
    • Brake Lights: Ensure they illuminate during braking.
    • Clearance & Marker Lights: Verify all are working properly.
    • Reflectors: Check for visibility and damage.

Front of Vehicle/Engine Area Inspection

  • Lenses:
    • Must be clean, proper color, and not cracked.
  • Fluid Levels:
    • Check engine oil, coolant, and other necessary fluids.
  • Fluid and Air Leaks:
    • Inspect for any signs of leaks.
  • Steering System:
    • Check gearbox, linkage, and hoses for any faults.

Steering Axle Inspection

  • Tires:
    • Minimum tread depth of 4/32" and properly inflated.
  • Rims:
    • Inspect for cracks or welds.
  • Lug Nuts:
    • Ensure tightness and check for rust trails.
  • Springs, Mounts, Airbags, & Shocks:
    • Must be secured properly.
  • Brake Lines or Hoses:
    • Check for leaks.
  • Brake Contaminants:
    • Ensure no grease or oil is present.

Side of Vehicle Inspection

  • Lenses & Reflectors:
    • Verify cleanliness and operational status.
  • Traffic Monitoring Devices:
    • Ensure mirrors and cameras are intact.
  • Battery:
    • Must be secure and show no signs of corrosion.
  • Fuel Tanks/DEF Tank:
    • Check for any leaks.
  • Frame:
    • Inspect for any cracks or structural integrity issues.

Combination Vehicle Inspection

  • Air & Electric Lines/Connectors:
    • Ensure there are no leaks and they are secure.
  • Fifth Wheel Skid Plate/Pintle Hook:
    • Must be greased and free from damage.
  • Kingpin & Apron or Drawbar:
    • Check for signs of wear.
  • Coupler & Mounting:
    • Ensure security and functionality.
  • Locking & Safety Devices:
    • Must be engaged properly.

Trailer-Only Inspection Items

  • Landing Gear & Clearance:
    • Fully raised and handle must be secured.
  • Reflective Tape:
    • Should be clean and visible.

Rear of the Trailer Inspection

  • Lenses & Reflectors:
    • Clean and not broken.
  • Lights:
    • Check brake, tail, turn, and flashers for functionality.
  • DOT Reflective Tape:
    • Must be secure and visible for safety.
