5.2.2 Respiration- Glycolysis using TM

Found in the cytoplasm and is where the production of ATP is, Has an outer and inner membrane (Folded to form cristae with Large SA for oxidative phosphorylation as proteins are required) Matrix is the fluid inside the mitochondria.

Glucose is broken down into ATP molecules for cellular reactions like active transport

Glycolysis- Anaerobic process but happens in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration and happens in the cytoplasm of the cell as Glucose is to large

Redox reactions- Reduction and oxidation reactions by removing hydrogen to make NADH Coenzymes transfer molecules from one place to another e.g NAD is an hydrogen acceptor, FAD. CoA

Stages of glycolysis-

Phosphorylation of glucose which makes 2 ATP into 2 ADP by substrate phosphorylation

This then becomes Hexose Biphosphate with 2 phosphates

Break Hexose Biphosphate into TP

TP is then oxidated into pyruvate which creates 4 ATP molecules so the net ATP is 2

4 ATP

2 pyruvate

2 NADH
