Precautions for Oxygen Administration
Patients often use oxygen therapy at home and need to be taught important safety guidelines.
Oxygen is flammable: Patients must avoid open flames completely.
Stop using gas stoves.
Do not smoke or be around anything that can catch fire.
No smoking signs: Place these in visible areas in the patient's room and in assisted living facilities to remind everyone that the patient is on oxygen.
Electrical safety: Ensure all electrical equipment is in good condition.
Check for frayed cords that could start a fire.
Fabric choice: Avoid wearing synthetic fabrics.
Choose cotton fabrics instead because synthetics can create static electricity, potentially igniting a fire.
Avoid oils: Do not use baby oils or any oil that can spontaneously ignite around oxygen.
