  • Republic - supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. ex: EGYPT, IRAN,IRAQ,ISRAEL,YEMEN,TURKEY,SYRIA, PALESTINE,LEBANON, CYPRUS

  • Absolute monarchy - Rule by one person — a monarch, usually a king or a queen — whose actions are restricted neither by written law nor by custom. ex: BAHRAIN, JORDAN (consti), KUWAIT (constitu), OMAN, QATAR, SAUDI ARABIA,

  • Theocracy - priest is leader

  • Dictatorship - lil to no limitations of a group or one person in charge of the country

  • Emirate - king/rank

  • Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader.

  • Bashar al Assad - president of SYRIA

  • Religious police - type of police who enforce religion, mainly in IRAN,

  • OPEC - organization of petroleum exporting countries

    • friendly with russia, sudan, us,
    • had a set price and production level
    • power fluctuates due to oil prices, war, natural disasters, changes in demand
    • S.A has the most oil, us uses the most
    • not all nations have oil, those who do, don't reply on subsistence farming and nomadic herding like sheep and goats
    • The Middle East has 70 % of the world's oil reserves.
    • oil referred to as black gold
    • top 5 oil rich: Saudi Arabia, iraq, iran, UAE, and kuwait - all surrounding the persian gulf
  • Persian Gulf - countries that surround the p.g. Have lots of oil

  • Subsidy - gov pays for lots of things so the citizens don’t have to, makes them feel rich

  • Nationalize - oil industry is gov. controlled the gov.

  • Sanction/embargo - used to limit people or countries from buying items

  • Balance of trade - tends to be positive b/c of the oil (oil prices impact the balance of trade in the me)

  • Guest worker - people coming internationally to work on projects meant to help develop the country

  • Diversification - selling oil and making money but not putting toward the oil industry, instead like hospitals and universities, etc.

  • HDI -

  • Population Distribution - where there is water, there are more ppl. ex: more ppl in israel b/c is on the coast so the pop distribution would be dense but in Yemen is would be low b/c its a desert.

  • Demographics - The middle eastern countries have very little to basically no arable land. I think this affects their ways of life because this means they would have to find other sources of food if they can’t farm.

  • Wealth

    • GDP - The Middle Eastern country with the lowest GDP is Alergia. It’s $15,200. It’s logical that it is low because its unemployment rate i__s 12%.__
    • unemployment - Middle Eastern countries with a lower unemployment rate have a great GPD.

For example, Bahrain's unemployment rate is 3.60% and has a GPA of $49,000. While that isn’t the best I think it's good enough for a developing country.

  • Education

    • Literacy rates - Most of the middle eastern countries have really high literacy rates for both genders. I think this may be because religion requires them to read often and since religion is a very important aspect of middle eastern culture, its people would be reading a lot
    • ^ :The middle eastern country with the largest gap in their male vs. female literacy rates is Egypt, 17%. I think this is because Egypt most likely doesn’t prioritize girls education as much as other middle eastern countries. Then again, its literacy rates weren’t high to begin with
  • Health

    • Fertility Rates - In some Middle East countries that have a higher fertility rate, their infant mortality rate is also high. For example, Alergia’s, Egypt, Kuwait have a fertility rate greater than 2.20 and their infant mortality rate is 17, 17, and 8. This means the two statistics could have a possible correlation.
    • Life expectancy - for most middle east countries and the world are in the same range, 70-80’s.
  • Infrastructure & technology

    • The minimum percentage of internet users in the Middle east is 41%.
    • The maximum percentage of internet users in the Middle East is 98%
