Regions

Appalachian Plateau:

  • Location: Northwest, TAG corner- TN, AL, GA

  • Climate: Cooler temperatures

  • Agriculture: Limited, poor soil

  • Economy: Tourism, Forestry, Coal only region with it

  • Description/Important Facts: Smallest region, home to Cloudland Canyon, home to Lookout Mountain

Valley and Ridge:

  • Location: Northwest

  • Climate: Cooler temperatures

  • Agriculture: Farming (in the valleys)

  • Economy: Farming, Textiles and carpet

  • Description/Important Facts: Low open valleys parallel to narrow ridges 700 to 1600 feet high, home to Dalton GA (carpet capital of the world), home to Ellijay (apple festival)

Blue Ridge:

  • Location: Northeast

  • Climate: Cooler temperatures, most precipitation

  • Agriculture: Small farms

  • Economy: Tourism (gold mining), forestry

  • Description/Important Facts: Highest elevation, home to Brasstown Bald (GA’s highest mountain peak)

Piedmont:

  • Location: Central

  • Climate: Hot and humid

  • Agriculture: Crops (cotton, soybeans, wheat), Products (poultry, eggs, hogs, cattle/beef)

  • Economy: Manufacturing, Poultry, Forestry

  • Description/Important Facts: Rolling hills, most populated, many major cities, State’s capital city (Atlanta), most of GA’s river begin in this region, home to Stone Mountain

Coastal Plain:

  • Location: South

  • Climate: Hot summers and cool winters

  • Agriculture: Crops (peanuts, peaches, soybeans, cotton, Vidalia onions, pecans), main agricultural region (farming, livestock, study)

  • Economy: Agriculture, pine/pulp production (paper), Tourism, Deep water ports

  • Description/Important Facts: largest region (60% of the state), once covered by a prehistoric ocean, home to the Okefenokee Swamp, home to the Barrier Islands
