Map Projections

There are various types of map projections, each distorting some aspect of the Earth's surface to represent it on a flat plane. Commonly used projections include:

  • Mercator Projection: Preserves angles and shapes, making it useful for navigation, but greatly distorts area, particularly near the poles.

  • Robinson Projection: A compromise projection that attempts to minimize distortion across size, shape, distance, and direction, providing a more visually appealing representation of the world.

  • Peters Projection: Focuses on accurately representing area, making it useful for showing the relative size of countries, but distorts shapes, especially near the equator.
