Work unit 4

1. What is Work?

In physics:

Work is done when a force causes a displacement in the direction of that force.

Three components must be present:

  1. Force (F)

  2. Displacement (d)

  3. Direction of displacement

If no displacement, no work is done — even if you feel tired.

2. When Work Is or Isn’t Done

Work IS done when:

  • Force causes movement in the direction of displacement
    Tammy lifting books
    Mason kicking a soccer ball

No Work is done when:

  • Force is applied but no displacement
✘ Cole pushing but ATV not moving

  • The force is applied but displacement is in a different direction
✘ Server holding tray and walking (force upward, displacement forward)
