Extranet Overview

  • Definition: Extranet refers to a controlled network within an organization that uses the internet to connect with external users such as customers and suppliers. It enables collaboration and sharing of information across business boundaries.

  • Implementation:

    • Typically implemented as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for secure communication.

    • Extranets utilize the internet while ensuring information security, mitigating risks associated with public networks.

VPN Security Features

  • Internet Protocol Security (IPSEC):

    • A protocol used by VPNs to secure transactions by adding an extra layer of security above the TCP/IP protocol.

    • Encapsulates the IP packet, creating a new packet for secure transmission.

    • The encapsulation happens at boundary routers compliant with IPSEC.

  • Tunneling:

    • The process of sending messages through a VPN Tunnel, ensuring privacy and security during data transmission.

    • Requires an encryption key for packet encapsulation.

Benefits of Extranet

  • Collaborative Platform: Facilitates collaboration among employees, suppliers, business partners, and customers.

  • Scalable for Businesses: Effective for organizations of all sizes, allowing them to leverage external resources and expertise.

Issues Related to Extranet

  • Hosting:

    • Requires decisions on where to host extranet pages, primarily with two options:

      1. On Own Server:

        • Benefits include control and customization but requires high bandwidth and additional firewall security, complicating the security setup.

      2. Internet Service Provider (ISP):

        • Easier and less costly to host, similar to standard web pages.

  • Security:

    • Additional complexities arise from needing robust firewall mechanisms when hosting on own servers, increasing workload for IT teams.

  • Accessing Issues:

    • Dependency on internet connection for accessing information; unlike intranet, which can function without it.

  • Decreased Interaction:

    • May lead to reduced face-to-face communication among customers, partners, and suppliers, potentially impairing relationship development.
