What Causes Earthquakes

An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the ground caused by the movement of tectonic plates. The following are the main causes of earthquakes:

  1. Tectonic Plate Movement: The Earth's crust is made up of several large plates that move slowly over time. When these plates move against each other, they can cause earthquakes. The movement of plates can create tension and pressure that builds up over time and is released suddenly in the form of an earthquake.
  2. Human Activity: Human activity such as mining, drilling, and the construction of large dams can also cause earthquakes. This is because these activities can change the stress and pressure on the Earth's crust, leading to seismic activity.

\    The Richter Scale is a way to measure how strong an earthquake is. It was made by a man named Charles F. Richter a long time ago. The scale goes from 0 to 10, and each number means the earthquake is ten times stronger than the one before it. Scientists use a special machine called a seismogram to record the biggest wave that happens during the earthquake. Then they use that information to figure out how strong the earthquake was.
