  • Monroe Doctrine:
    • Asserted that the United States would police the Western Hemisphere.
  • The Roosevelt Corollary stated that the U.S. would enforce the Monroe Doctrine.
    • Involves military intervention.

Big Stick Diplomacy

  • Relies on military intervention as a primary tool.
  • Associated with Teddy Roosevelt's foreign policy approach.
  • The "big stick" represents the use of military force.

Modern Foreign Policy

  • The U.S. utilizes all three diplomacy types (big stick, dollar, and moral) in its foreign policy today.
    • Military intervention is used when necessary.
    • Financial control is employed through economic means.

Protecting Democracy
