Chapter 9 - Cellular Respiration

Cellular Respiration

  • C6H12O6 + 6 O2 → 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP
  • Aerobic: requires oxygen
  • Exergonic: gives off ATP (32 total per glucose molecule)
  • 4 main steps:
    • Glycolysis - energy investment
    • Transition reaction
    • Citric acid cycle (Kreb’s cycle)
    • Electron transport chain

Fermentation

  • Anaerobic
  • Only get energy from substrate-level P during glycolysis (2 ATP)
  • 2 different paths:
    • Alcohol
    • Lactic acid
