Introduction to Early Human History

The discovery of "Lucy" in Ethiopia in 1974 provided crucial insights into early human evolution. Lucy, a small adult Australopithecus, lived approximately 3.2 million years ago. Since her discovery, extensive research by archaeologists, anthropologists, genetic scientists, and historians has illuminated the journey of early human species, their migrations, tool development, control of fire, language mastery, and artistic endeavors.

Approximately twelve thousand years ago, during the shift to agriculture, many early human groups transitioned from hunting and gathering to settled communities.

Human Evolution

Evolution is a gradual process of change over time. Similar to the evolution of technology (e.g., smartphones from telegraphs), human evolution involves biological adaptations to changing environments.

  1. Early Hominins:

    • Australopithecus: Lived in eastern and southern Africa between 2.5 and 4 million years ago; Lucy belonged to this genus.

    • Homo habilis: "Handy man," possibly the earliest member of the genus Homo, appearing 2–3 million years ago. Known for creating early stone tools (Oldowan tools).

    • Homo erectus: "Upright man," emerged in East Africa around 2 million years ago, likely evolved from Homo habilis.

      • Characteristics: Lived entirely on the ground, walked fully upright, comparable height to modern humans.

      • Behavior: Used sophisticated stone tools, controlled fire, constructed huts, cooperative hunting/foraging, possible vocal communication, cared for the sick and elderly.

      • Migration: Migrated out of Africa between 1.8 and 1.5 million years ago, reaching North Africa, Near East, Europe, and Asia. Reasons include climate change and following prey. They adapted to different environments, leading to species diversity.

  4. Triggers for Migration:

    • Climate Change: Increasing dryness in Africa around 100,000 years ago reduced available plants and animals.
