Identifying Electrolytes

Determining Electrolytes

  1. Is it a strong Acid?

    • SNIPBRICC

      • Sulfuric Acid - H2SO4

      • Nitric Acid - HNO3

      • Hydroiodic Acid - HI

      • Perchloric Acid - HClO4

      • Hydrobromic Acid - HBr

      • Hydrochloric Acid - HCl

      • Chloric Acid - HClO3

  2. Is it a strong Base?

    • group 1 or 2 cation + OH-

  3. Is it an ionic salt?

    • is there a metal/ammonium present?

      • yes - is it AANG:

        • Acetate, Ammonium, Nitrate, Group 1 cation

      • no - look at solubility rules*

  4. Is it a weak Acid?

    • probably starts with H

  5. Is it a weak Base?

    • does it contain N?
