water potential
hypertonic - a solution that has a high solute concentration
hypotonic - a solution that has a low solute concentration
isotonic - a solution that has same solute concentration as another solute
remember - diffusion is movement of particles from area of high concentration to area of low concentration
osmosis is movement of water from area of high water concentration to area of low water concentration
cell placed in hypertonic solution = solutes move out of cell = cell shrinking
cell placed in hypotonic solution = solutes move into cell = cell swells
water potential is a measure of the potential energy of water
as water potential becomes more negative, becomes difficult for water to move

solute potential - tendency of water to move from area of high water concentration (low solute concentration) to area of low water concentration (high solute concentration)
water moves through osmosis from area of high water potential to area of low water potential
when plant tissue bathed in hypotonic solution, solute potential of tissue is more negative than solute potential of solution
