It all began in 1970, when a Virginia Commonwealth University student and general member of AKA, along with Betty Waller Gray of the Upsilon Omega Chapter drafted ideas on developing an Undergraduate Chapter of VCU Campus. In 1973, Cynthia Johnson wrote a letter expressing her desire to join Alpha Kappa Alpha and form a chapter.

The next class of initiates consisted of Angela Brown, Joyce Hancock, Susan Preston, Gloria Reaves, and Ruby Thompson.
