Phonology in Linguistics
From Sound to Meaning
Linguistic competence enables the decoding of continuous soundwaves into ideas/messages.
Not all languages primarily use sound; sign languages will be discussed later.
Levels of Analysis in Linguistics
Analysis occurs at multiple levels:
Break Speech Signal: Discrete speech sounds are identified.
Meaningful Units: Grouping of speech sounds into words.
Phrases and Sentences: Words are combined to form interpretable sentences.
Focus will be on phonology: the study of sound structure in language.
Speech Sounds
Every language has a unique set of speech sounds called phonemes.
A phoneme is defined as the smallest sound unit that alters the meaning of a word.
Understanding Phonemes
Example: Changing the last sound of "map" ([mæp]) to a "t" sound produces "mat" ([mæt]).
Distinction from letters: phonemes are represented in brackets [ ].
Example: [p] for the p sound.
Minimal Pairs
Words differing by one phoneme are termed minimal pairs.
Examples in English:
pop vs. cop → [pɑp] vs [kɑp]
cat vs. kit → [kæt] vs. [kɪt]
fail vs. kale → [feɪl] vs. [keɪl]
Phoneme Variations
Pronunciation can vary without altering the word:
Example: [p] can be released (with air) or unreleased (without air).
Variations don’t create new words in English.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
The IPA allows precise writing of phonemes.
Each sound phoneme across languages is assigned a unique symbol.
Approx. 300 phonemes exist in the full IPA.
Limitations of Roman Alphabet
The Roman alphabet is insufficient for phoneme representation:
One-to-one correspondence in IPA contrasts with the Roman system (e.g., multiple sounds for one letter).
Example: "GHOTI" demonstrates spelling inconsistencies.
Practical Use of IPA
Phonemes represented in IPA:
cat: [kæt]
map: [mæp]
book: [bʊk]
Some sounds represented by single letters in English require two symbols in IPA (e.g., sh: [ʃ], th: [θ]).
Articulation in Phonology
Phonemes differentiated by articulation: how vocal tract parts move.
Active articulators: tongue, lips, velum (soft palate).
Difference between Consonants and Vowels
Consonants: High closure in the vocal tract.
Vowels: Relatively open articulation, produced as tones.
Vowels are louder and easier to sing; consonants are more turbulent.
Articulatory Features
Consonants classified by:
Place of articulation (location of constriction)
Manner of articulation (how constriction occurs)
Voicing (vocal cords vibrating or not)
Phonotactics
Each language has rules for phoneme combinations termed phonotactics.
Certain phoneme sequences are disallowed (e.g., *bnick is not a valid English word).
Examples of Phonotactic Restrictions
Plural endings in English (e.g., -s) may lead to sound changes:
toe [toʊ] → toes [toʊz (or toʊs)]
cat [kæt] → cats [kætz (or kæts)]
Phonological Rules
Rule example: [z] → [s] / voiceless consonant __
Applies to plural forms of nouns where voicing and sound sequence matter.
Case Study: Writer vs. Rider
Flapping Rule: [t] and [d] become [ɾ] before unstressed vowels.
Vowel Lengthening Rule: Vowels lengthen before voiced consonants.
Example: writer [raɪtər] becomes [raɪɾər], rider [raɪdər] becomes [raɪ:ɾər].
