Motion

How to Describe an Object in Motion

  • To describe an object’s motion, you must be able to describe its position relative to a reference frame

    • reference frame: a set of coordinates that can be used to determine positions and velocities of objects in that frame

    • ex: the Earth

Speed

  • refers to how fast an object is moving in terms of how far it moved in a given amount of time

Velocity

  • the measure of speed in a given direction

  • distinguishes direction

  • it is important to know the magnitude

    • magnitude: distance or quantity

  • formula: v = 🔼d/🔼t

    • v: velocity

    • 🔼: change in

    • d: displacement

    • t: time
