CHAPTER 1
Absolute location The precise point where a place is located
Distortion A change in the shape, size, or position of a place when it is shown on a map.
Map projection a way of representing the spherical earth on a flat surface
Relative location where a place is located in relation to another place

Climate the pattern of weather over a long period of time
Economic activity any action that relates to the making, buying, and selling of goods and services
Landform any natural feature of earth's surface that has a distinct shape. Landforms include major features such as continents, plains, plateaus, and mountain ranges. They also include minor features such as hills, valleys, canyons, and dunes.
Physical feature
Population density is the average number of people in a unit of area such as a square mile. Population density measures how crowded an area is.
Region an area defined by one or more natural or cultural characteristics that set it apart from other areas.
Thematic map a map that shows a particular theme, or topic
Vegetation all the plants and trees in an area
CHAPTER 4
Ecosystem An Ecosystem needs food and predators to flourish.
Food chain Food chains are the animals that are predators and ones that aren't.
Food web The food web in an ecosystem helps provide food for every animal.
Freshwater Freshwater is the water found in rivers that has no salt.
Watershed The watershed separated the two rivers.
CHAPTER 3
Ecumene a geographic region that is well suited for permanent settlement by people. Areas not included in the ecumene are generally too dry, too cold, or too rugged for permanent human settlement.
Plural society is a society in which different cultural groups keep their own identity, beliefs, and traditions.
Rural found in or living in areas that are not close to cities .
Urban found in or living in a city.
CHAPTER 6
Conservationist someone who works to protect the beauty and natural resources of the environment from destruction or pollution.
Fauna all the animal life in a particular region.
Flora all the plant life in a particular region.
Topographic map is a map that uses elevation lines and symbols to show a region's physical and human features. These features may include hills, valleys, rivers, lakes, roads, trails, and buildings.
CHAPTER 8
Emigrate The act of leaving one's home country to settle in a new one.
Immigrate To come and live in a foreign country.
Migration stream A group of migrants who share the same home country and left their country at the same time.
Pull factor A condition or circumstance that pulls or attracts people to a new place.
Refugee A person who is forced to leave their country due to an unsafe environment and live and settle in a new country.
CHAPTER 9
Rural decline a process of population loss in rural areas that can include depopulation, land degradation, and industrial decline.
Spatial inequality the unequal distribution of resources, opportunities, and treatment across different geographical areas.
Standard of living the degree of wealth and material comfort available to a person or community.
Urbanization increases the proportion of people living in towns and cities.
CHAPTER 10
Adaption The act of changing to be more suitable for something.
Indigenous peoples Descendants of people who descend from people who originated in an area.
Subsistence farming Agricultural activity to produce food to consume.
Traditional culture a set of practices, beliefs, and customs that have been passed down through generations within a community or society.
CHAPTER 21
Gender based division of labor the division of work into two categories based on gender. The result is that men and women do different kinds of work.
Informal economy the part of the economy in which goods and services are exchanged outside of government control. People who work in the informal economy often sell goods on the street or street market.
Micro enterprise is a very small business with few or no employees.
Micro entrepreneur a person who starts and runs a very small business.
CHAPTER 32
Economic independence a condition in which countries have strong economic ties and depend on each other for resources, technology, trade, and investment.
Free trade the flow of goods and services across national borders, with little or no government control
Globalization the development of a global control
Multinational corporation a large company that has operations in more than one country.
