Notes about North American Natives
Far North Natives
Glaciers, mountains, tundras, and plains are physical features of the region the eskimos live in.
They use snow around their campus for water and to use for tea and use tents during the spring and summer.

They eat seal, arctic berries, benik, and other animals that are around the arctic area and it connects to how humans adapt to their environment.
They use tents during the spring and summer and use igloos during the winter.
Movement is crucial for the Far North Natives as they need to move to hunting grounds as ice breaks away during the summer.
Plains Natives
The plain natives have shelters that protect them from the weather and climate. Their homes, called tipis, are made of animal skins. If a storm was to blow through their area, the cone-shaped homes would make the wind fly upward instead of flying off. This is a representation of human-environment interaction.
In order to survive, they use movement to their advantage and follow herds of animals to hunt for meat and skins.
They used horses to travel around and carry goods for trade, which is a representation of a human-environment interaction. Since lugging around things across long distances would be very exhausting, they decided to use horses around their area to carry things.
The human-environment interaction between the buffalo and humans became so important that they worshiped the large animals with dances and rituals.
The wood bisons were both forced to flee by humans but also being brought back by them, because humans owe a big debt to them. They provided people with shelter, food, and tools and now we are returning their helpful services today. This is an example of human-environment interaction.
Southwest / Northwest Natives
They moved and search for water and fertile land and then settled there. Because they were also living in a hot, dry, fierce environment, it was also hard for them to move around which was also why they weren’t nomads. The geography of where they were also affected how they lived, having needing to be able to have access to nearby water because they lived in the mountains.
Because of their area around the mountains in the U.S., they have to depend on using earth and water near them to make Adobe houses to survive in harsh weather and constantly changing winters and summers. This is an example of a human-environment interaction.
They had water near their location, so they made use of it by making irrigation systems, an example of human-environment interaction.
SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SW AND NW
NW has more rivers, lakes, and trees
There’s snow in NW
Mountains
Similar elevation and rocky
Waterfalls
Islands
Southwest is hot and dry
Eastern Woodland Natives
They’re in the Northeast part of North America and the mountains of the region affected how their home(s) were structured and what their resources were.
The Iroquois helped provide a foundation for the American Government’s systems and amendment. The way their power pyramid worked was unique, because of the use of a “clan mother” and the fact that they used matriarchy in their government. The way they used sachems in the council meetings was also a smart tactic, since because there were citizens from every clan. This meant all clans also had input on their wants and needs for change and other decisions. Their way of having multiple advisors and subdivided leaders has also been integrated into our government. I think because they were Natives and (most) people “feared” them then, they weren’t given credit for their contributions to the American and Western society.
The homes of the Native Woodland Natives were designed to make sure that they would fit the requirements of comfort for the people and fit for their environment. People made wigwams for nomadic(ish) life, since it was strong enough and insulated enough to survive cold nights and warm nights but also could be constructed easily and used for shorter stays.
Clans were family groups and clan mothers had the most power.
The Iroquois Confederacy was a league or confederacy of Native American nations in the Northeastern part of America.
The purpose of the longhouse was to house entire families in them.
Sachems made rules and took care of tribes.
A wigwam was a type of shelter used for shorter times of staying in one place and the curved roof helped make sure that it would survive in harsher climates and conditions.
