Math Term 1
- ### Exponents
- 4x4x4=64 This is called a repeated multiplication.
- Is called an exponent.
- An exponent has a base number, and an exponent.
- A repeated multiplication has multiplied numbers taht are the same.
- To turn a repeated multiplication into an exponent, we look at the number that is the base numebr and count how many there are.
- Ex. 2x2x2 -
- To turn it back, just do the same thing but reversed.
- Extra: GEMDAS rule is a way to do math easily it does the operations on order, first it does Grouping, then exponents, then multiply, then divide, then add, and lastly subtract.
- ### Algebra
- Algebra is a math equation that includes a letter that represents an unknown number.
- Our main goal in algebra is to find the value of the unknown number and complete the equation.
- Ex. 4 + x = 9 The value of x is 5
- To find the unknown number, perform opposite operations to get the variable by itself on one side of the equals sign.
- Ex. 5 + x = 12 : 12 - 5 = 7 : x = 7
- There are 2 types of algebra: Algebraic Equations and Algebraic Expression.
- Algebraic Equations are equations with an unknown number and an equal sign (=).
- Algebraic Expression are equations with an unknown number but no equal sign (=).
- ### Division of fractions
- To divide fractions we need to do the "Keep, Change, Flip" rule.
- Keep the first fraction the same, and change the division sign to multiplication. Flip the second fraction upside down, then multiply straight across.
- Ex. = =
-
- ### Addition and subtraction of decimals
- To add and subtract decimals, you alline the decimal points and add or subtract them.
- Ex. \begin{array}{r}
1.4 \\
+ \quad 2.5 \\
\hline
3.9
\end{array} \begin{array}{r}
4.9 \\
- \quad 3.5 \\
\hline
1.4
\end{array}
- For subtracting, if the top number is lower than the bottom number, you borrow from the numebr beside it and add 10 to the top number.
- ### Multiplying Decimals
- To multply decimals, you have to follow these steps.
- Ignore the decimals and multiply like normal whole numbers.
- Then, count the amount of numbers to the right of the decimal and count that many times to the answer to the left.
- Ex. \begin{array}{r}
1.4 \\
\times \quad 0.2 \\
\hline
0.28
\end{array}
- ### Non-terminating and terminating decimals
- To determine if a decimal is Non-terminating or Terminating, the numbers have to be finite or infinite.
- If a decimal is finite or stops at a number, its a Terminating decimal.
- But if a decimal is Infinite, it is a Non-terminating.
- There are 2 symbols to determine Non-termiantign decimals, Viculum and ellipsis.
- Viculum is a bar you put on top of repeating decimal numbers that have patterns.
- Ex. 7 is the repeating number.
- Meanwhile Ellipsis are three dots you put on decimal numbers that doesnt have patterns.
- Ex. 0.649163...
