INTRODUCTION
- Sensory organs are extensions of the central nervous system (CNS) that monitor internal and external environments.
- Sensory receptors are specialized nerve endings that detect stimuli and send impulses to the CNS.
- Perception is reality: sensory input is interpreted by the brain. Without a brain to interpret impulses, sensations do not exist independently.
- Animals perceive the world differently based on their sensory capabilities.
SENSORY STIMULI TYPES
Four general types:
- Mechanical stimuli – touch, hearing, balance
- Thermal stimuli – heat and cold
- Electromagnetic stimuli – vision
- Chemical stimuli – taste and smell
GENERAL SENSES
- Distributed throughout the body.
- Receptors are simple; transmit via peripheral and autonomic nerves.
- Keep CNS informed about internal and external conditions.
1. Visceral Sensations
- Internal body sensations: hunger, thirst, hollow-organ fullness.
- Stimulus type: Chemical and mechanical.
- Receptors: Mainly stretch receptors in hollow organs.
- Pain from stretching (e.g., gas in intestine, ureter stone), but cutting/crushing may not be painful.
- Exception: Urinary bladder filling is sensed but not acutely painful; it triggers reflex contraction.
- Pleura and peritoneum have many pain receptors; inflammation (pleuritis/peritonitis) is painful.
2. Touch (Tactile Sense)
- Sensation of contact with body surface; includes pressure.
- Receptors: Detect light contact, deep pressure, vibration, hair movement.
- Operates subconsciously unless contact is abrupt or severe.
- CNS filters constant stimuli; only changes reach conscious awareness.
3. Temperature Sense
- Part of thermoregulation (homeostasis).
- Two receptor types:
- Superficial: In skin; detect skin temperature changes.
- Central: In hypothalamus; monitor core temperature via blood.
- CNS initiates corrective mechanisms:
- Too hot: Vasodilation, sweating, seeking shade.
- Too cold: Vasoconstriction, shivering, piloerection, seeking warmth.
4. Pain (Nociception)
- Nociceptors: Most common and widely distributed sensory receptors (absent in brain).
- Four processes of nociception:
- Transduction: Conversion of painful stimulus to nerve impulse.
- Transmission: Impulse travels to spinal cord.
- Modulation: Spinal cord modifies impulse (amplify/suppress).
- Perception: Brain interprets pain (cortex, autonomic, emotional areas).
- Pain classifications:
- By location: Superficial, deep, visceral.
- By duration: Acute (sharp) or chronic (dull).
- Animals may hide pain as a survival instinct; behavioral responses vary.
5. Proprioception
- Sense of body position and movement.
- Receptors: Stretch receptors in muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint capsules.
- Operates subconsciously; essential for balance and coordinated movement.
- Clinical test: Curl foot under; normal animals correct quickly.
SPECIAL SENSES
- Located in head; complex organs.
- Often involved in clinical conditions.
1. Taste (Gustatory Sense)
- Chemical sense; receptors in taste buds on tongue papillae.
- Structure: Gustatory cells with hairlike processes in taste pores.
- Primary tastes: Sweet, sour, salty, bitter (humans).
- Combined with smell for flavor perception.
2. Smell (Olfactory Sense)
- Chemical sense; more important in animals than humans.
- Olfactory epithelium high in nasal passages.
- Olfactory cells with cilia detect odor molecules dissolved in mucus.
- Dogs use smell for communication ("pee-mail").
3. Hearing (Auditory Sense)
- Mechanical sense; converts air vibrations to nerve impulses.
- Ear divisions:
- External ear: Pinna, external auditory canal, tympanic membrane.
- Middle ear: Ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes), Eustachian tube.
- Inner ear: Cochlea (hearing), vestibule & semicircular canals (equilibrium).
Sound Transmission Pathway
- Sound waves → pinna → external auditory canal → tympanic membrane.
- Tympanic membrane vibrates → ossicles amplify → oval window.
- Fluid movement in cochlea → organ of Corti hair cells bend → nerve impulses → brain.
Inner Ear Hearing Structures
- Cochlea: Spiral, fluid-filled.
- Organ of Corti: Hair cells on basilar membrane; tectorial membrane above.
- Frequency mapping: High-pitch near oval window, low-pitch at cochlear apex.
4. Equilibrium (Balance)
- Mechanical sense; receptors in vestibule and semicircular canals.
- Vestibule:
- Contains utricle and saccule with maculae.
- Otoliths in gelatinous matrix bend hair cells → detect head position/linear motion.
- Semicircular canals:
- Three canals at right angles; contain ampullae with cristae.
- Cupula moves with endolymph lag → detects rotary motion.
- Brain integrates vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive input.
5. Vision
- Photoreceptors in retina detect light.
Eyeball Layers
- Fibrous layer: Cornea (transparent, admits light) and sclera (white, supportive).
- Vascular layer (Uvea): Choroid (blood supply, tapetum lucidum), iris (pupil size), ciliary body (lens shape).
- Nervous layer: Retina (photoreceptors: rods and cones).
Eye Compartments
- Aqueous compartment: Anterior/posterior chambers; aqueous humor produced by ciliary body, drained via canal of Schlemm.
- Vitreous compartment: Vitreous humor (gel-like).
Lens & Accommodation
- Lens: Transparent, biconvex; changes shape for focusing.
- Accommodation: Ciliary muscles contract → lens rounds for near vision; relax for distant vision.
Retina
- Layers: Photoreceptors → bipolar cells → ganglion cells → optic nerve.
- Rods: High light sensitivity, grayscale, low detail.
- Cones: Color vision, high detail, need bright light.
- Optic disc: Blind spot (no photoreceptors).
Image Formation
- Refractive structures: Cornea (main), aqueous humor, lens, vitreous humor.
- Image formed on retina is inverted; brain corrects.
Extraocular Structures
- Conjunctiva: Bulbar (eyeball) and palpebral (eyelid) portions.
- Eyelids: Upper/lower, third eyelid (nictitating membrane).
- Lacrimal apparatus: Produces and drains tears (lacrimal glands → puncta → nasolacrimal duct → nasal cavity).
- Extraocular muscles: Six main muscles (rectus and oblique) for eye movement.
CLINICAL APPLICATIONS SUMMARY
General & Pain
- Heatstroke/Hypothermia: Thermoregulation failure; can be fatal.
- Anesthesia/Analgesia: General (unconscious) vs. local (localized) anesthesia; analgesia dulls pain.
- Wind-Up: Spinal amplification of pain during surgery; prevented with pre-emptive analgesia.
Ear
- Ear Hematoma: Blood accumulation in pinna; surgical drainage needed.
- Otitis Externa: Inflammation of external ear canal; requires cleaning and medication.
- Upper Respiratory Infections: Can impair smell; may cause anorexia/dehydration.
Eye
- Glaucoma: Increased intraocular pressure → pain/blindness; often due to poor drainage.
- Cataracts: Lens opacity; surgical removal often needed.
- Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of conjunctiva; treated with antibiotics/anti-inflammatories.
- Motion Sickness: Conflicting sensory signals (vestibular vs. visual); preventable with medication.
