Memory- AP Psych

  • Memory- storing what has happened to you or what you have learned and retrieving this information

  • Recall- remembering information you previously learned- frq

  • Recognition-being able to pick a memory from options- multiple choice test

  • Relearning- how long it takes for something you previous knew to be relearned- can relearn trig identities faster after I had known them at one point

  • Encode- working on memorizing something

  • Store - the information you haven learned staying for a certain amount of time

  • Retrieve - remembering something

  • Sensory memory- when you are remembering the sensations (smell, hearing, feel) of a memory

  • Short-term/working memory- something only remembered for a short time- a code given

  • Long term memory- things you will always remember or will remember for a long time- how to do basic math

  • Explicit memory- memories you can declare- like your name

  • Implicit memory-memory of learned skills- how to do a chemistry problem

  • Automatic processing- unconsciously putting things in our memory- remembering a thing that happened to you

  • Effortful processing- trying hard to remember or learn something- making a mnemonic to remember something

  • Iconic memory- seeing a memory- very short

  • Echoic memory- hearing a memory

  • Chunking- putting things into groups helps us remember things better

  • Mnemonics- rhymes, songs, or other things that help us remember things

  • Spacing Effect- cramming doesn’t work as well as studying over a long stretch of time

  • Testing Effect- the more you test yourself, the better you will remember

  • Shallow processing- very basic processing- asking someone if a word is a specific color

  • Deep processing- based on meanings of words- asking someone if the word fits in the sentence

  • Self Reference Effect- we remember things better when we apply them to ourselves

  • Semantic memory- explicit memory of things that don't apply to us- facts and general knowledge

  • Episodic memory- explicit memory of things that apply to us- personal memory

  • Memory consolidation- the storage of long term memory

  • Flashbulb memory- clear memory of an emotional moment- we can see it vividly- flashbulb

  • Priming- associations in memory

  • Serial Position Effect- our tendency to recall the last items in a list initially and the first items after a delay
