AP HUG Unit 2
Population distribution describes the way in which a population is spread out.
The degree of concentration of people living in a given area is called Population Density.
Factors Influencing Population Distribution:
1. The relief of land: flat land is easy to build on. Where there are steep slopes, development is more difficult, so people tend to settle on the flat lands.
2. Climate: areas with heavy rainfalls, low temperatures and long periods of droughts will make it hard for human habitation (low food production, etc)
3. Fertile Areas - agricultural land: food plants grow easily and livestock animals can live well.
4. Location of Mineral Resources: mineral resources are those that can be extracted from the ground and used in economic activities such as manufacturing. Bauxite is one such mineral.
5. Developed Areas: An area with a range of facilities and amenities such as schools, factories, parks, etc.
Types of population Density:
1. Arithmetic Density: total population divided by total amount of land. Shows how spread out people are.
2. Physiological: total population divided by total arable land (land that can produce food). Shows how much stress we're going to be putting on each section of land.
3. Agricultural Density: total farmers divided by arable land. Shows how efficient agriculture is in our society (includes the use of technology in agriculture).
