water/bozeman water worksheet

The Mars Curiosity Robot found large quantities of water on Mars.

  • even tho this water is likely in the form of ice, the fact that it found water suggests that there was once liquid water, so there could hv been life or was life on Mars at one point

IF WE CAN FIND WATER THEN WE CAN FIND LIFE OR SIGNS OF LIFE

  • cuz all living things need water to survive

Water was likely delivered to Earth & other plants in the solar system through meteorites & asteroids

Polar Molecule

Water is a polar molecule, meaning that the oxygen atoms are “greedy” (they will electrons closer to themselves). This creates a partial negative charge. But the hydrogen atoms have a partial positive charge. This leads to the formation of hydrogen bonds between water molecules

  • this is important cuz it leads to the importance of water being an area where life can exist.

4 reasons why life requires water

1) A good solvent - water can dissolve any material

2) ice floats - ice & water become less dense as they get colder, meaning that ice can float. However, if it couldn’t float, then it would sink to the bottom of lakes & oceans. This would cause the water body to freeze. So, its important that ice floats because it supports supports life by preventing water bodies from freezing.

3) high heat capacity - the hydrogen bond between all the water molecules, makes it difficult for it to heat up. But to heat up, it would require a lot of energy & it will release lots of energy as it cools down. So, water’s high heat capacity allows for living organisms to maintain a stable internal pressure through thermoregulation.

4) is where metabolism takes place - is where chemical reactions (like the ones in the human body) occur
