Aspirin
What is it? Antiplatelet
How does it work? Irreversibly inhibits cyclo-oxygenase (COX), reducing thromboxane A₂ production and therefore reducing platelet aggregation.
When do I use it?
· Suspected ACS
· Acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema
How do I use it?
Adult dose: oral tablet – 300mg – chewed and followed by a small sip of water
Contraindications:
· Allergy AND/OR adverse drug reaction or aspirin OR any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
· Bleeding or clotting disorders
· Current GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
· Patients less than 18 years of age
Precautions:
· Possible aortic aneurysm or any other condition that may require surgery
· Pregnancy
· History of GI bleeding or peptic ulcers
· Concurrent anticoagulant therapy
What do I need to watch for?
· Epigastric pain/discomfort
· Nausea and/or vomiting
· Gastritis
· GI bleeding
· NSAID induced bronchospasm
