Atoms

Atoms are the basic unit of matter

(Also the smallest chemical component (particles) of an element structure that make up the element and have the same properties of the element).

ATOMIC STRUCTURE

The center of the atom is the nucleus that consist of Protons and Neutrons. The nucleus is surrounded by Electrons.

Protons: Subatomic particles with a positive charge (+)

Remember: the number of protons in an atom is called an atomic number. It uniquely identifies the element

Example: Every hydrogen has one proton, every has eight protons

Electrons: Subatomic particles with a negative charge. This particle orbits the nucleus (-)

This particle travels in a speed on 2,200 kilometers which is fast! It is even fast enough to get around the earth in just 18 seconds

Neutrons: Subatomic particles that has no charge; they are neutral (0)

FUN FACT: There are trillions and trillions of atoms in the body that is mostly oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen.
