whiskey’s rebellion: a new tax on whiskey affected western farmers and some 500 men attacked federal officials in pennsylvania who attempted to collect the tax. this rebellion challenged federal authority to see if they could keep control. washington led a force of 13,000 men to pennsylvania and put down the rebellion.
