Structure of the Skin
Epidermis
Definition: The outermost layer of skin, primarily composed of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium.
Avascular: Lacks blood vessels, relying on diffusion from the dermis for nutrients.
Layers (Strata): Includes stratum corneum, stratum lucidum (only in thick skin), stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale.
Cell Types: Contains keratinocytes, melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and Merkel cells, each serving distinct functions.
Keratinization Process: Involves the transformation of keratinocytes as they migrate from the basal layer to the surface, undergoing changes and eventually dying.
Dermis
Definition: The deeper layer of skin, composed of dense irregular connective tissue, providing structural strength.
Components: Contains blood vessels, nerves, glands, hair follicles, and lymphatic vessels.
Regions: Divided into the papillary region (upper) and reticular region (deeper), each with distinct features.

Hair
