Functions of the Integumentary System

Structure of the Skin

Epidermis

  • Layers (Strata): Includes stratum corneum, stratum lucidum (only in thick skin), stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale.

  • Keratinization Process: Involves the transformation of keratinocytes as they migrate from the basal layer to the surface, undergoing changes and eventually dying.

Dermis
