Ch 3: Microbiology and Cell Culture

Names and Shapes of Bacteria:

Cocci: Spheres/balls

Bacillus: oval/rod

Spirillum: spiral

Some Greek prefixes show how bacteria arranges itself while growing

  • Strepto: twisted chain

  • Staphylo: bunch of grapes

Bacterial Environments:

Aerobic:

  • High O2 levels

  • Obligate if O2 is absolutely necessary for growth

  • Facultative if they just grow better in O2 but not required

Anaerobic:

  • Absence of O2

  • Obligate if absence of o2 is necessary

  • Facultative if they grow better in absence of O2

Ideal Temps:

  • Psychrophilic:

  • Mesophlic:

  • Thermophulic:
