GENERAL BIOLOGY 1 L1 P1(PRELIMS)

  1. The branch of science that studies living things is referred to as the life sciences. It is under the

  2. natural sciences. Bio is derived from the Greek words "bio" (life) and "logus" (study). Experts in this field of science are known as biologists.

  3. Some life sciences focus on a specific study, such as zoology (study of fauna and animals) and botany (study of flora and plants). There are also some specific studies in biology linked to medicine, agriculture, and other sciences at present.

  4. Here are some of the examples:

  5. Anatomy is the study of forms in plants and animals,or specifically in human beings.

  6. Biotechnology: manipulation of living matter, such as genetic modification

  7. Bioengineering: application of knowledge in biotechnology by means of engineering

  8. Cell biology is the study of cell molecular structure as well as the chemical interactions that occur in it.

  9. Ecology: interactions of living things with each other and their relationships within the environment

  10. Entomology: focus on insects

  11. Ethology: focus on animal behavior

  12. Genetics: study of genes and heredity

  13. Microbiology: focus on microorganisms and their interactions within their environment

  14. Mycology: study the fungi

  15. Paleontology: fossils and geographic proofs of early life

  16. Pathology: nature and causes, processes, and development of diseases

  17. Physiology: functions of living matter together with its organs and parts

  18. Taxonomy: naming and classifying organisms

  1. Principle 1: Cell structure and function: all living things are composed of cells.

  2. Principle 2: Organization: highly organized

  3. Principle 3: Balance in the body—homeostasis, which is the stability of the inside condition of our body.

  4. Principle 4: Transfer of character traits: this is heredity, which is the transfer of character traits from the parents to the offspring.

  5. Principle 5: Evolution: the manner in which the organism changes over a period of time

  6. Principle 6: Interaction in the Environment: interactions of biotic and abiotic factors within their environment

  7. Principle 7: The use of energy: they need and require the use of energy for their different biological processes. The energy in the ecosystem serves as fuel for every living organism in their species.
