Leg Bones and Muscles

Leg Bones and Muscles

Learning Objectives

  • Identify major blood vessels and nerves in the leg.
  • Identify leg bones and their features.
  • Describe the three muscle compartments of the leg, including:
    • Muscles in each compartment
    • Actions of each muscle
    • Innervation of each muscle

Leg Bones

  • Tibia: Located medially.
  • Fibula: Located laterally.
  • Proximal Tibiofibular Joint:
    • Connects the tibia and fibula proximally.
    • Does not bear a significant amount of weight; approximately 10% of body weight goes through the fibula.
    • Allows slight movement during ankle inversion and eversion.
  • Interosseous Membrane:
    • Connects the shafts of the tibia and fibula.
    • Located between the tibia and fibula (inter- means between, -osseous means bone).
    • Divides the leg into anterior and posterior portions.
  • Distal Tibiofibular Joint
