Leg Bones and Muscles
Leg Bones and Muscles
Learning Objectives
- Identify major blood vessels and nerves in the leg.
- Identify leg bones and their features.
- Describe the three muscle compartments of the leg, including:
- Muscles in each compartment
- Actions of each muscle
- Innervation of each muscle
Leg Bones
- Tibia: Located medially.
- Fibula: Located laterally.
- Proximal Tibiofibular Joint:
- Connects the tibia and fibula proximally.
- Does not bear a significant amount of weight; approximately 10% of body weight goes through the fibula.
- Allows slight movement during ankle inversion and eversion.
- Interosseous Membrane:
- Connects the shafts of the tibia and fibula.
- Located between the tibia and fibula (inter- means between, -osseous means bone).
- Divides the leg into anterior and posterior portions.
- Distal Tibiofibular Joint
